I got a package today. It was a pair of shoes that I had ordered a while ago, also on a whim. They're Vibram Furoshiki, and they are the closest thing I have had on my feet to being barefoot. Walking outdoors with them on feels new and interesting. I took them for an easy walk today, just to run some errands, and the ground under my feet felt different than it ever has. I could feel the texture of the surfaces I was walking on, there was new information that I was gathering about my world through my feet. What a fascinating thing, to rediscover the world through your soles.
Some of my walks will be with one of my three teenagers who live with me. I may coax a friend along some days. I'm going to blog, posting pictures and videos as we go. I'm looking forward to discovering more of this city, and who knows what else I'll find along the way. I'll be sure to let you know.
If you'd like to join me on the journey, I invite you to start your own year of walking. Or maybe a month, or a week, or just one day. Share your stories with me. I'd love to hear about your journeys.
Tomorrow I will start. 365X5. My Year of Soleful Living.
I made a decision today. It was made quickly, spontaneously, but it seems like a good decision. So instead of quietly letting it go the way of other good decisions, I'm putting this one out into the world right away. I'm going to walk, everyday, for a year. 365 days. My goal is 5km (which is about 3.1 miles) each day. That should take me about an hour, which seems like a reasonable length of time, both in terms of how my body will feel, and in being able to fit it into my life.
I'm a Yoga Teacher in Toronto who's investigating healthy movement for the body. As a part of this exploration, I've decided to do more intentional movement, including walking 5km (3.1miles or about an hour) each day. I'm going to blog as I go, with photos and videos, maybe some insights into functional movement, and some inspiration for your own walking challenge. Leave comments here and let me know how your walking is going!
